St. Ulrich to Salzburg (2022)

After rediscovering posts from my old ivodr.com blog, I decided to bring my travel stories back to life—making them accessible again and preserving the memories of an incredible journey I returned from just over two years ago.

This is Post #2—the true beginning of the adventure. More stories to come!

I hitchhiked from St. Ulrich to Innsbruck (waiting for only 2’ for this first ride!!!) and from there to Klagenfurt (4 more rides and longer waiting times). Then I took a train to Salzburg (after a day on the road sitting into the familiar Railjet felt wonderfully safe and certain - like “coming home”.

What I loved was:

  • All the communication with the drivers (many of them passing, not picking me up but communicating their apologies for that.
  • A driver giving me ice cream and a soft drink
  • The kindness of all the drivers!

Reflections

  • Do I really want to spend my time waiting for rides next to roads? Currently my answer is: maybe on country roads if I don’t mind how far I get that day, but right now not on highways.

Salzburg was great! Clearly the highlight was the open air screening of the opera “Il trittico”. It touched me sooo much and I loved it. Now I’m super inspired to make music/theater/art a significant part of my trip and my life!
